jewelry industry
what are average (entry level sales) jewelry store wages?

Does anyone know (appx.) what kind of $ I can make working in sales at a national chain jewelry store like Zales, for instance? Is the pay usually hourly or commission based? BTW I have experience in sales but none in the jewelry industry.

Probably just above minimum. I work in a mall and we have a Hannoush and a Kay at either end. I know most of the employees make roughly $9-$10/hr (minimum here is $8) and ALL of them complain that they don’t get nearly enough hours. For some reason it seems high end jewelry stores like to hire a TON of people and then give them all very few hours.

This handmade creation is offered in partnership with NOVICA, in association with National Geographic.Product features:Jewelry box carved with the sinuous beauty of a dragon from a single piece of walnut woodHandmade jewelry accessory features ancient symbol of good fortuneStorage box lined in velvet and polished with agate stone and waxStory Behind the Art:M. Ayub was born in the valley of Kashmir, known for its rich master craftsmanship tradition. Abounding with tall sturdy trees like walnut and chinar, Ayub's family business is walnut furniture. 'I have pursued this craft since I learned it in childhood. Militancy in Kashmir has done tremendous damage to the industry and we were compelled to open an outlet in New Delhi. Walnut wood products are completely carved by hand. The wood is obtained from very old trees, placed in the shade for dehydration for two to three years. No artificial color is ever used. They are rubbed with agate stone before a wax polish is applied. It is a colossal investment in time for each finished product. This is a dying industry due to political disturbances and the new generation, who don't possess the patience required to craft in walnut wood. I want it to continue, since past generations dedicated themselves to this craft. What is Worldstock? The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. The Film Industry in Brazil (Paperback)

The Film Industry in Brazil (Paperback)

$25.69

Looking back through the prism of the severe economic crisis for filmmaking in the 1980s, The Film Industry in Brazil explores the unusual relationship between the state-supported industry, which often produced politically radical films, and the authoritarian regime that had held sway for twenty years. To ground his analysis, Johnson covers the early years of the film industry, 1898-1930; attempts at industrialization during the 1930s and 1940s; film industry congresses and government film boards, 1950-1966; the National Film Institute, 1966-1975; and the expansion of the state`s role from 1969 through 1980. Well-conceived, carefully researched and documented, Johnson`s study fills a major gap in film studies by tracing the development of this industry in Brazil, focusing specifically on its relationship to the state.

The Global Videogames Industry (Paperback)

The Global Videogames Industry (Paperback)

$30.87

Over the last decade, videogames have become an increasingly important arm of the global cultural industries. Profits from videogames have not only surpassed Hollywood`s annual box office, but videogames have come to be seen as a important industry, offering potential for growth in a variety of countries.   The videogame industry has also seen some of the more determined moves towards convergence of any media industry. Relatively unhampered by the sorts of legal and regulatory battles faced by industries such as telecom and broadcast, videogame platforms have already made numerous inroads to convergence. One example, the Sony Playstation 2, offers not only the ability to play videogames but also, with a relatively inexpensive hardware add-on, the ability to connect to the Internet as well as the capability to play DVDs and CDs. This has meant that the markets that video games draw on have expanded beyond being `toys for teenage boys` to include high numbers of females and users over the age of 35.   At the same time, increasing numbers of university programmess have sprung up, focusing on the design of videogames, and a number of governments have begun to explore ways to not only use games for political means but also to develop their own national industries in hopes of taking a slice of the global market. Such moves have placed videogame production as part of the information industry with all its associated benefits and baggage. A view of videogames that sees them as an industry – even an information industry – must examine videogames as commodities geared towards producing a profit. Understanding videogames in this way impacts not only our understanding of them as a cultural phenomenon of them but also changes the way we must theorise them. In spite of this, there has been little attention given to the origins of the industry, its ties to other media production, or to its

Cement from the Lehigh Valley built America`s skyscrapers, dams, and highways. The Lehigh Valley Cement Industry documents not only the quarries and cement mills but also the dozens of companies that sprang up to supply and support the industry. The photographs also tell the stories of the people who formed the cement communities?the entrepreneurs, executives, engineers, and immigrants whose legacies live on in the five multinational companies still making cement in the valley.

Global Culture Industry

Global Culture Industry

$26.68

In the first half of the twentieth century, Theodor Adorno wrote about the `culture industry`. For Adorno, culture too along with the products of factory labour was increasingly becoming a commodity. Now, in what they call the `global culture industry`, Scott Lash and Celia Lury argue that Adorno`s worst nightmares have come true.Their new book tells the compelling story of how material objects such as watches and sportswear have become powerful cultural symbols, and how the production of symbols, in the form of globally recognized brands, has now become a central goal of capitalism. Global Culture Industry provides an empirically and theoretically rich examination of the ways in which these objects – from Nike shoes to Toy Story, from global football to conceptual art – metamorphose and move across national borders. This book is set to become a dialectic of enlightenment for the age of globalization. It will be essential reading for students and scholars across the social sciences.

Industry of Nature (Hardcover)

Industry of Nature (Hardcover)

$36.8

Although information on ecology and sustainability is published and posted daily, it`s obvious that most people feel powerless when faced with the state of our environment today. Materials and technologies claim a dominant position with regard to ecological problems, but we sometimes forget that these may not always be the key to good, comprehensive solutions. The use of materials is only one approach to the larger ecological issue, which clearly has philosophical, metaphysical, economical, and social implications. The world of nature, on the other hand, is an amazing arena filled with smart models of simple and sustainable behaviors. Nature undeniably questions the pretentiously authoritative status that humans have allocated themselves, and nature is the best example of a wholly sustainable and autonomous industry.Industry of Natureexplains seventy-five of nature`s strategies to fulfill needs such as protection, temperature regulation, bonding, air conditioning, self-cleaning, anti-collision, transmission of information, camouflage, and many more. By describing these strategies and adding practical application examples, the book provides creative professionals with inspiration and tools for augmenting their work, expanding their imaginations, and improving the world in which we live. Interviews with various specialists, a chapter covering the history of biomimicry, and a bibliography deepen the subject and provide the reader with handles to further delve into the subject. A profusion of photographs and illustrations brings the ideas and relevant information to life.
